Day Three "Day three started out in Helena to fine weather and we were bound for
Glacier National Park and the Going to the Sun Highway. It was a fantastic
run up the east side of Glacier to the Blackfoot Indian Reservation where we
were treated to Indian Tacos at the local community college. With word
coming from the Park, there was a possibility of a road closure due to a
recent snow storm that blanketed the mountains and caused an avalanche as
well as numerous downed trees. We made it to the entrance of the Park and
our fearless leader Farnum was parked at the gate with a big grin,
indicating that the road was open. Words can not explain the drive through
this side of Glacier. Pictures can only tell part of the story. The roads
were nearly completely cleared and we headed down the other side of Glacier
to stay the night at Lake McDonald Lodge. My co-driver Paul Manney found a
little time to cast a fly on this most spectacular lake while most of the
rest of the group headed off for a evening boat ride with live music.

Day Four "After a wonderful stay at Lake McDonald, the crew was off for another
stellar day of Montana's roads. Leaving the Park the fog started to lift a
little and we were headed north. Shortly after leaving the Park, Paul and I
managed to pull off the road for a little more fishing. This was the first
time I had ever seen fish like this. These salmon were bright red and could
be seen very easily as they were swimming in this crystal clear stream. I
managed to catch one; not the biggest but it sure was colorful. Then the
most fantastic ride by most counts was along the lake to Libby. I don't
think anyone would argue that it was worth every mile. In fact I heard that
some folks even considered running back up just to drive it again. We
arrived in Libby and were greeted by the local car club who not only hosted
a fantastic lunch for us, but also brought out their prized cars for us to
have a look at. And a great bunch of cars they had! The rest of the day was
spent making our way down to Missoula for our last night. Everyone was a
little weary by then. We were treated to a fantastic slide show presentation
and special thanks were offered to all who were so instrumental in the
success of this first rally. Dinner was excellent and most everyone lingered
about to talk about their experiences. It was truly a wonderful rally and I
look forward to future ones to participate in.
I'd like to take a moment to offer my sincere thanks to Farnum Alston, his
wife Kirsten and Jim Sitton for their hard work and enthusiasm to bring this
first rally to us all who shared in it. In addition, a huge thanks to the
other folks who made the rally run so smoothly from the mechanics, luggage
shuttle, photographers, musicians and to the other people who offered their
hospitality to the rally participants. I'd also like to thank the sponsors
and in particular, Steven Walker of Limes Watches who not only assisted in
obtaining the Limes Rally Watch, but also loaded the updates on this site."
Sincerely,
Dave Berghold - The Last Wind-Up, Bozeman MT.
